In
2005 the
University of California, San Diego established the
Center for Earth Observations and Applications (CEOA).
Led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, CEOA provides
an integrating vision for our work across the spectrum
of natural, physical, and social sciences, engineering,
and information technology related to Earth observations
and applications.
CEOA
will stimulate, support and coordinate sustained research
and applications in Earth observations at UCSD.

Symposium: "The Integrated Ocean Observing Systems (IOOS)
and the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI): The
Role of Industry"
Hosted by CEOA, the symposium brought together leaders
from academia, industry, and government agencies to highlight
current ocean research efforts and applications, and
to explore opportunities for fostering new, innovative
collaborations in ocean observing.

Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI), Inc., has
selected UC San Diego to design and construct
information technology and networking for the
Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The initial
$29 million Cyberinfrastructure (CI) award is for
six years, and total funding may reach more than
$42 million over the course of the planned 11-year
project. The University of Washington was awarded
$2.2 million for the first year planning phase of
the Regional Cabled Node of the OOI off the
Washington and Oregon coastlines. For more
